Privacy,
without fine print theatrics.

Better Notes is designed to help you write and organize notes while limiting unnecessary data collection.

Information you create

Better Notes stores the notes and related information you create, including titles, note bodies, dates, categories, folder assignments, completion and expiry choices, reminders, People decisions, and Review state.

This content is stored on your device. If private iCloud sync is enabled in the version you use, Apple also transfers and stores supported app data in the private iCloud database associated with your Apple Account. Better Notes does not operate a separate account system or custom note server.

The intelligence used to classify notes and recognize useful details runs on your device. Note content is not sent to a cloud AI service.

Apple system services

  • iCloud and CloudKit. When enabled, supported data syncs through your private iCloud account.
  • StoreKit. Apple processes purchases. Better Notes receives purchase and entitlement status, not your payment-card details.
  • Notifications. Reminders you schedule are delivered by iOS. Account-style reminders use redacted copy.
  • Widgets and App Groups. The widget uses a small, redacted Coming Up snapshot without full note bodies or private account values.
  • Natural Language. Supported name recognition runs locally through Apple's on-device framework.

Analytics and tracking

Better Notes uses TelemetryDeck, a privacy-focused analytics service, to understand aggregate product use and improve how well organization features work. Analytics can include an anonymous per-install identifier, bounded actions such as a Welcome page view or category correction, an hour-rounded timestamp, and basic app and device metadata.

Better Notes does not send note titles or bodies, person names or aliases, reminder text or exact dates, tag or folder text, search queries, exports, or notification content to analytics. TelemetryDeck does not store IP addresses. Analytics data is not linked to your identity and is not used for advertising or cross-app tracking. See the TelemetryDeck privacy policy.

Accounts notes

Better Notes may recognize account-style notes so previews, widgets, and reminder copy can be safer. Better Notes is not a password manager and does not provide autofill or a credential vault.

Exporting and sharing

You can export your notes as JSON or Markdown. Exported files may contain full private note content. After export, you control where those files are stored or shared, and other apps may apply their own privacy practices.

Retention and deletion

Active notes remain until you edit or delete them. Notes moved to Recently Deleted may remain recoverable for the period shown in the app. You can restore them, delete them immediately, or empty Recently Deleted.

Delete All Data removes Better Notes data from the app. If private iCloud sync is active, deletion is intended to propagate through the private synced store. Apple backups and previously exported files follow separate rules controlled by Apple or by you.

Security and children's privacy

Better Notes relies on Apple platform protections and privacy-safe previews for selected content. No software can guarantee absolute security. Better Notes does not knowingly collect children's personal information for advertising or tracking.

Changes and contact

This policy may be updated as Better Notes changes. The effective date above will be revised when a new policy takes effect.
